Metalworks

The digital prints you see were all created from photographs of my original metal sculpture. The photos were scanned into Adobe Photoshop and then resized, duplicated, distorted, cut, repositioned, and fused, to create new images with multiple layers of meaning.

In these prints, I have been interested in two intertwined modes of imagery.  One series of works may be described as organic abstractions that are inspired by plant forms and the human anatomy.  These pieces deal with fundamental aspects of the life cycle: birth, growth, and the energy of the “life force.”  By recreating organic forms in metal, and then reconfiguring them in print, I want to render them as inviolate, armored biology that can withstand the hostilities of our increasingly toxic environment.

There is another group of images that mainly represent human beings, or parts of us, as pieces of armor.  These works address human vulnerability and the uncertainties of physical and psychological protection.  Although the forms are clearly made of metal, the delicate appearance of their thin, open shells suggests the fragility of the lives they are meant to protect.

ALL IMAGES BELOW ARE DIGITAL PRINTS. SIZES GENERALLY VARY FROM 20″ X 30″ TO 30″ X 40″
